ECDC has been bringing in the children outside from the prison and providing them residential home services for the children in homely environment through ‘Butterfly Home’. We offer comprehensive care for imprisoned children until they are 16 years old or longer when the child is believed to be at great risk. Children from 1 year to 18 years reside live at ECDC’s residential Butterfly Home. Sometimes we also receive children days old being referred by government to us in cases where the father murders the mother.
The Butterfly Home covers nearly 2600 Sq.mt of land and is as per the ‘Standard of Operation of Residential Home’ Nepal Govt. We have separate buildings for boys and girls, study room, entertainment hall, kitchen cum dining, open play ground, small out door auditorium which are all differently abled friendly spaces. The buildings are all solar light back up system and we also we focus on waste management.
Our residential home ‘Butterfly Home’ provides an environment to support their growth and development by enhancing the full development – socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually which may not possible inside the jail but outside its premises where they feel comfortable. To sum up, ECDC is an organization that works to take care of children whose lives are influenced by the hemisphere of the penal system.
Currently at the residential home there are 45 children – 25 girls and 20 boys aged from 1.5 yrs to 18 years old. These children come from poor family background and have no place to go and some child were living with their relatives which were both difficult for the child as well as the relatives. The children at ECDC come from almost 25 different districts all across the country and some are from the most remote areas of the country.
Once at the home the children are enrolled in a public-private school, and they receive all the security, care, and health attention necessary for proper emotional and physical development and fulfillment of their basic needs are all met here. The children at the home range are from various age group with same background. From the early age we teach the children to live like a family and for this we divide the children in small groups where elder children share the responsibility of taking care of younger ones. Besides focusing on only the academic studies, we the children also take part in daily chores to teach them responsibility and hard work skills that will be necessary for them in future.
At the Residential Home all of the children basic needs are fulfilled which they lacked inside the confinement of the prison. They are provided with nutritious healthy food comprising of well-balanced diet along with seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables. They also have regular medical checkup and treatments as per need. Once a year the children are taken to meet their parents at the prison and stay with them for couple of weeks. Since many of the children are outside the Kathmandu from remote districts it is difficult for them to meet on regular basis so during the month long Dashain Festival the children are taken to meet with their parents and celebrate the festival. Every month the children have combined birthday party which the children themselves organize and we also organize outing to parks, zoo 2-3 times a year where the children can enjoy themselves for entertainment. For the elder children we take them to hiking and residential tours.
For there skill enhancement the elder children are also enrolled in several skill enhancement skills training such as cooking, bakery, vocational skills like electrician, carpentry etc. The children have lots of option at the Butterfly Home, they participate in extra-curriculum activities. One of them is Teakwondo, which is huge success. The children also participate in various competition and always come home with several medals and best team awards. Besides this the children also have Classical Guitar classes, Chariya (Traditional) dance, Art, Handicraft and Sewing activities too.
